The Room of Doom
This 30 minute team building activity is fantastic for senior managers and potential leaders. It provides a “light bulb” moment and allows delegates to self assess their managerial and leadership styles.
The “Room of Doom” is an actual location on the Colorado River in Utah. During peak snow melt, 23,000 cubic feet of water rushes through a narrow canyon every second creating a seething whirlpool that has ended the life of many kayakers. This team building program involves establishing a “dry” rescue scenario with Adventure for Life setting up a replica of the river.
The river contains eddies, holes, whirlpools, and cliff areas. Each kayaker is given a crash course in kayak safety (use of throw bags and signaling) and then sets off down the river. Each participant will end up at specific locations on the river depending on instructions. The 6th kayaker running the rapid ends up in the Room of Doom.
The rescue involves creating a plan and executing it perfectly. There is only one way to perform this rescue and it all comes down to key decision makers taking charge.
All 9 rescuers will play a part, and we structure it so certain kayakers take a leadership role. Other kayakers take simple but crucial roles. If they donʼt follow instructions, the rescue goes pear-shaped.

This activity is perfect way to break up a conference or segue into an appropriate presentation. 30 minutes can really demonstrate a personʼs potential or highlight how autocratic leadership styles can prevent tasks being achieved.
